Pick Munich Residenz if you want the richer palace museum and the easiest logistics. Pick Nymphenburg Palace if you want gardens, pavilions, and a slower royal escape outside the centre.

The Residenz is the no-nonsense choice for most Munich visitors. It is central, indoors, huge, and packed with Wittelsbach state rooms, the Antiquarium, treasury pieces, and enough gilt to finish your palace quota for the trip.

Nymphenburg is more of an outing. The palace matters, but the real reason to go is the palace-and-park complex: long approaches, gardens, the Marstallmuseum, and park pavilions such as Amalienburg in the warmer season.
