The stops we'd build a Lisbon trip around

One honest pick per place, and why. Open any for the full verdict. The planner arranges these into your days for you.

  • Jeronimos Monastery Worth it

One of Lisbon's great buildings, and the carved two-story cloister is what your ticket actually pays for.

  • Sintra Worth it

Worth the trip from Lisbon, but the real choice is which two or three sites to commit to, since they sit apart and each…

  • Belem Tower Worth it with caveats

Gorgeous from the outside and well worth a look, but the interior is small and the stairway is a steep narrow squeeze…

  • Sao Jorge Castle Worth it with caveats

Worth it for the view off the walls, which is about as good as Lisbon gets.

  • Alfama Worth it

Easy yes, and it costs nothing.

  • Pena Palace Worth it with caveats

A genuinely one-of-a-kind romantic palace on a misty peak, worth the effort if you book a dated ticket and show up…

  • Quinta da Regaleira Worth it

One of the most rewarding things to do in Sintra, as long as you go early or late and treat it as a two-to-three-hour…

  • Oceanario de Lisboa Worth it

One of Europe's best aquariums, built around a single huge tank that earns the trip out to Parque das Nacoes.

Good to know before you plan

Where we would spend carefully, or not at all.

  • Belem Tower Worth it with caveats Gorgeous from the outside and well worth a look, but the interior is small and the stairway is a steep narrow squeeze, so plenty of people are content shooting it from the riverside. Interior visits started again in May 2026 after the restoration.
  • Sao Jorge Castle Worth it with caveats Worth it for the view off the walls, which is about as good as Lisbon gets. Just know the ruins themselves are modest, so you are paying for the panorama and the hilltop stroll, not castle interiors.
  • Pena Palace Worth it with caveats A genuinely one-of-a-kind romantic palace on a misty peak, worth the effort if you book a dated ticket and show up early or late to beat the crush.
  • Santa Justa Lift Cheaper to do yourself See the iron tower from the street, then walk up toward Carmo for the upper area. Only ride it if the queue is short or the old elevator cabin is the whole point for you.
