Pick Hoover Dam if you want the easiest strong day trip from Las Vegas. Pick Grand Canyon West if you want the Skywalk and canyon viewpoints badly enough to spend most of the day on it.

These are both Las Vegas day trips, but they are not the same kind of day. Hoover Dam is close, efficient and surprisingly satisfying even as a half-day outing.

Grand Canyon West is farther, pricier and more packaged. The canyon views are real, and the Skywalk is the draw, but this is not the classic South Rim trip people picture from postcards.
