The Met vs MoMA: choose the everything museum or the modern-masterpiece hit list
Pick The Met for breadth and one big museum day, pick MoMA for modern masterpieces in a shorter visit.
Pick The Met if you want one great New York museum and do not mind getting lost in it. Pick MoMA if you want modern masterpieces in a tighter, faster Midtown visit.
The Met is the better all-rounder. It covers more than 5,000 years of art, sits by Central Park on Fifth Avenue, and can swallow half a day without trying.
MoMA is the sharper choice if your mental list is Van Gogh, Picasso, Warhol, design, photography, and modern art. It is easier to fit into a Midtown day, but do not assume it is free: regular adult admission is paid, and UNIQLO Friday Nights are currently free for New York State residents with advance reservation.
Pick The Metropolitan Museum of Art if
- You want the best single museum choice for a first New York trip.
- You like ancient objects, European painting, decorative arts, and global collections.
- You want to pair a museum visit with Central Park.
Pick Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) if
- You mainly care about modern and contemporary art.
- You want a museum that fits neatly into a Midtown schedule.
- You want to see works like The Starry Night without committing to a half-day museum marathon.
