This is not a fair either-or: the Rijksmuseum is Amsterdam’s great art museum, while the Anne Frank House is a small, serious historical visit. If you must choose, pick the Rijksmuseum for art and Anne Frank House for emotional weight, but book Anne Frank House weeks ahead or the choice may be made for you.

The Rijksmuseum is the big Dutch art and history museum: Rembrandt’s Night Watch, Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Dutch masters and a huge collection in a landmark building on Museumplein.

The Anne Frank House is the actual hiding place connected to Anne Frank’s diary. It is smaller, more controlled and more affecting. Tickets are online only, released on a schedule, and commonly sell out well in advance.
