Sintra vs Cascais: Choose palaces or choose the beach

Choose Sintra for the best day trip, choose Cascais for the easiest good day.

Pick Sintra if you will commit a full, planned day. Pick Cascais if you want a relaxed Lisbon escape with beaches, lunch and easy strolling.

Sintra and Cascais are both easy day trips from Lisbon, but they are not the same kind of day. Sintra is cultural and dramatic: Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, the Moorish Castle and the National Palace are packed into steep hills.

Cascais is the low-friction option: a seaside town on the Cascais line from Cais do Sodre, with beaches, a marina, seafood and flat walking. You can technically combine Sintra and Cascais, but Sintra deserves its own day unless you are happy skimming both.

What you see Palaces, castle walls, forested hills, decorative gardens and big views. It is the more distinctive day trip. Beaches, marina, old-town lanes, coastal paths and an easy resort-town rhythm. It is pleasant rather than jaw-dropping.
Time Give Sintra a full day. Even two headline sights can take most of it once you factor in hills, queues and transport between monuments. Cascais works as a half-day or full day. You can keep it loose: beach, lunch, stroll, train back.
Access and booking Trains run from Lisbon to Sintra, commonly from Rossio. Pena Palace uses timed tickets and private cars cannot access the monument, so plan on shuttle buses, walking routes, taxis or tuk-tuks. Trains run from Cais do Sodre to Cascais on the Cascais line, though 2026 modernization works mean some evening and Sunday departures are replaced by buses, so check the current timetable. No big booking puzzle otherwise, unless you add a tour or specific activity.
Crowds and cost More crowded, more expensive and more logistical. Pena Palace in particular needs early planning. Usually cheaper and easier. Beach crowds happen, but you are not managing timed palace entries all day.
The view or payoff The payoff is high: colourful palaces, romantic hill scenery and some of Portugal’s most memorable architecture. The payoff is mood: sea air, an easy lunch and a reset from Lisbon pavement.

  • You want palaces, history and scenery more than beach time.
  • You can start early and plan transport between sights.
  • You are willing to deal with crowds for a bigger reward.
