The Kunsthistorisches is the heavier, more classic choice: Habsburg collections, Old Masters, a palatial building on Maria-Theresien-Platz and enough Bruegel, Vermeer, Caravaggio and Rubens to justify a serious museum morning.

The Albertina is not second-rate, just different. It sits by the Opera, has the permanent Monet to Picasso display, a major graphic arts identity, Habsburg state rooms and a terrace that gives the visit a city-centre lift.
