If you only have one imperial palace slot in Vienna, choose Schonbrunn unless central convenience matters more than spectacle.

This is not just palace versus palace. Schonbrunn was the Habsburg summer showpiece southwest of the centre, with formal gardens, the Gloriette, a maze, paid garden attractions and the zoo spread across a huge estate.

The Hofburg is the winter palace complex in the city centre. Its core visitor route is the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments, with the Spanish Riding School and Imperial Treasury nearby as separate add-ons. Current reality check: the Imperial Silver Collection is officially closed until further notice, so do not plan the Hofburg around that alone.
